History

The event was named after the Comte de Berteux, a successful racehorse owner in the 19th century. When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, it was given Group 3 status. For many years it was held at Chantilly.

The venue of the Prix Berteux was frequently changed during the 1990s. It was briefly staged at Longchamp (1991–92), Maisons-Laffitte (1993–94, 1996) and Deauville (1995). Its distance was usually 3,000 metres, but for the first two runnings at Maisons-Laffitte it was extended to 3,100 metres. The event returned to Chantilly in 1997, but it was later switched to Vichy (2001–02) and Deauville (2003). It was discontinued thereafter.
